LLOYD BARNES, JR.
WALTER A. MARTIN  is our recognized STNinJC Member for the Month of March 2010.

Walter was born in Johnston County and is a life long resident of Princeton, North Carolina.
He is a 1979 graduate of Princeton High School and a 1985 graduate of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at
Johnston Community College where he finished at the top of his class.

Walter holds the Advanced Law Enforcement Certification awarded by the North Carolina Division of Training and
Standards. This is the highest award given to Law Enforcement Officers.

He spent 30 years working for State and Local governments and retired from the Smithfield Police Department after
spending nearly 24 years with the Agency. He held ranks of Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant,
Patrol Lieutenant and retired as a Master Officer assigned to the Investigations Division.

Walter is 49 years old and married to Michelle Walls Martin for nearly 19 years.  They have one son, Anthony, who is a
Sophomore at Princeton High School

Walter is in his third term serving on the Town of Princeton Board of Commissioners, is an Ordained Minister, and attends
"There is Hope Now Ministries" in Micro, North Carolina.

Walter joined the "Serve the Need in Johnston County, Inc." on July 21, 2009.  
He currently serves on the Executive Board and holds the position of
Regional Coordinator, Region 1 -- Eastern Johnston County.  

He hosted the Organization's fifth and final Regional Community Meeting
covering Princeton, Pine Level, and Micro on Thursday, January 21, 2010.

In the span of only 49 years, I have since learned that Walter has even more accomplishments.
He is a member of the  Princeton Area Men's Club and
President of the Johnston Conty Law Enforcement Officers Association.

He is a past member of the Boy Scouts of America serving as Scout Leader.

We applaud Walter for his life work in community service and for hi
s
high ethical and moral standards.

WALTER A. MARTIN
Lloyd was born and raised in Wilson's Mills, North Carolina and is dedicated to improving the quality of life in
Johnston County and is committed to improving the economic environment throughout the County.  He advocates for
diverse individuals, including youth, the elderly, the needy, and minority students.,

Lloyd's diverse background enables him to function in many areas of community life.  He was one of the first
minorities hired by the Raleigh Fire Department where he served for thirty years.  He also has held positions as a
Hazardous Materials Technician and Auxiliary Policeman at NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Further, Lloyd
has served on the Wilson's Mills Planning Board since the Town was formed.  He ran a competitive campaign for County
Commissioner in 2008. Lloyd has completed the "Mentoring the 100 Way" curriculum at North Carolina Central University,
and was certified as a mentor by the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.  

Lloyd is best known and recognized his good and kind deeds.  In 2006, he was one of two individuals designated
by the Johnston County Board of Commissioners as "Citizen of the Year" for his leadership efforts in the community.  In
this same year, he was a member of the steering committee to form the first Selma-Smithfield Boys and Girls Club that
opened in October 2006.
In 2007, he was honored by the Johnston County Citizens Association, a non-partisan  
organization addressing voting rights, youth scholarships, and school and other community concerns.  Also in 2007, the
Johnston Community College (JCC) Black History Committee awarded its inaugural scholarship to a local citizen in his
honor.
In 2008, he received a Spirit of Shaw Award for service for Christ and Humanity. One of Lloyd's most prestigious
awards was presented to him
in 2009 on May 6th at the annual conference of the Sons of Allen Men's Ministry, second
Episcopal District, when he received the
"Bishop's Award" for his extraordinary dedication and commitment to community
enhancement.   The second Episcopal District represents six African Methodist Episcopal Churches located in the following
areas of North Carolina: Rocky Mount, Spring Hope, Wilson's Mills, Enfield, Nashville, and Smithfield.  
In 2010, Lloyd was
named a
"PAUL HARRIS FELLOW" by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International in appreciation of tangible and
significant assistance given by him for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the
world.  
In August 2010, Lloyd was appointed to the position of Director of the Minority Male Mentoring Program at
Johnston Community College.

Currently, Lloyd is involved in the following activities:

  • Member of the Wilson's Mills Planning Board.

  • Economic Committee member of the Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce by was of the Johnston County
    Citizens Association.

  • Member of the Local Chapter of the Sons of Allen, a Program started by the founder of the African Methodist
    Episcopal Church which assists the elderly and needy to locate assistance with food and utility bills.

  • Career and educational mentor to minority male students at Johnston Community College.

  • Member of the Black History Committee at Johnston Community College.

  • Working with professors at NC Central University to organize a Statewide male mentoring program.

  • Mentor of young children during camping, ball games, and other outings.

  • Partnering with Johnston Community College to implement a continuing education program started at the Union Hill
    African Methodist Episcopal Church.

  • Seeking funding for the Selma-Smithfield Boys and Girls Club.

  • Member of the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County.

Lloyd has been married to his wife, Paulette for 39 years.  He has a daughter, Krystal and a grandson, Kobe. Lloyd is a
faithful member and Trustee of the Union Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church.

PETER PERRINO
Pete was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, near Boston and grew up in Hialeah, Florida.  He moved back to Boston
to go to college and from there spent 21 years traveling the country and world for Uncle Sam, including 2 years at Ft. Bragg.  
Pete retired to Orlando, Florida where he met his current wife, Peggy, a native of Johnston County.
They moved to
Smithfield, North Carolina in 1995 and to Clayton in 1997.  He holds residence in Johnston County for over 15
years and proudly considers himself a Johnstonian from way back.

Pete earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Accounting) from Northeastern University, a Master of
Science in Education
(Adult Education & Career Counseling) from the University of Southern California, and a Master of
Business Administration
(Management) from the University of Oklahoma.

He has a rich professional background with over 35 years in supervisory and managerial, instructional and training, financial
planning-budgeting-auditing positions in government and private sectors.

Pete retired with the rank of Major from the US Army in 1986 where he had served since 1965.  He managed and
supervised multi-national workforces, ranging in size from 3 to 350 people, in Asia, Panama, Europe and in the United States
in diverse activities.  

Positions he held during his Army career include the following:

•        Director of Industrial Operations (Logistics), Darmstadt, West Germany, 1981-1986;
•        Chief, Plans and Operations Division, Frankfurt, West Germany, 1980-1981;
•        Finance Officer and Commanding Officer of the 107th Finance Section, Fort Bragg, NC (1978-1980);
•        Program and Budget Analyst, Canal Zone, Republic of Panama, 1976-1977;
•        Deputy Finance and Accounting Officer, Canal Zone, Republic of Panama, 1974-1976;
•        Finance and Accounting Officer, Fort Wolters, Texas, 1972-1974;
•        Cash Control and Disbursing Officer, Fort Huachuca, AZ, 1970-1972;
•        Battalion Signal Officer and Headquarters Battery Commander, Republic of Vietnam, 1969-1970;
•        Installation Supply Officer, Fort Monmouth NJ, 1967-1969;
•        Depot Supply and Maintenance Officer Republic of  South Korea, 1965-1967

Since his retirement and up to the present time, he has held the following key positions.

•        Adjunct Instructor of  Business, Valencia Community College, Orlando and Osceola Campuses, Orlando, FL, 1988-
1994, and Florida Southern College, Orlando Campus, 1988; Central Texas College and City Colleges of Chicago,
European Campuses, 1986-1988;
•        Vice-President of  Counseling, Training and Development, Florida Associates, Inc. (FAI),  (an Outplacement and
Career Guidance Firm), Tampa/Orlando, FL 1988.

From 1995 up to 2001, Pete was involved in the following COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES in which he held
memberships.

•        Ambassador, Education, and Small Business committees of the Greater Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce,
•        Ambassador Committee of Clayton Chamber of Commerce
•        The Board of Directors, Support Our Students – Bridging the Gap (SOS), Smithfield, NC. (1995-1997).
•        The Board of Advisors for the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, Johnston Community College, Smithfield, NC.
•        The Johnston County Nursing and Adult Care Home Advisory Committee

Today, Pete is a Member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Four Oaks, an Officer on the Board of The Triangle Sons of
Italy Lodge #2817, and volunteers with GCM, a ministry that prepares meals for the residents of the Raleigh Rescue
Mission.  He is also a Member of the  Leonard Moore American Legion Post #71 in Clayton where he currently holds the
position as Post Chaplin.

Pete joined the "Serve the Need in Johnston County, Inc." on June 11, 2010.
On August 12, 2010, Pete volunteered to serve as the Regional Coordinator, Region 4 -- Southern Johnston County.
Holding this Position, he also is a member of the Executive Board.

Pete brings with him a rich background in management and service.  

We thank Pete for filling this essential position and look forward to the progress he will make in coordinating the
Organization's activities in Southern Johnston County.
