A Scholarship Program has been established wherein awards of $500 are made to needy college bound high school
seniors in Johnston County. The first three scholarships were granted for the 2009 Fall Semester to seniors from
Clayton High School, South Johnston and North Johnston High Schools.
A Resource Directory has been published on the Organization's Website as a means for Johnston County citizens to
access information on what and where services are available to address their needs. The Directory covers services in
the following categories:
Medical, Dental, Mental Health, and Social Services; Financial assistance with utility and rental payments; Location of shelters for
the homeless and victims of domestic violence; Food, clothing, and transportation assistance; Family and Substance Abuse
Counseling; Services for the Homebound and those with special needs; and other categories including Social Security, Vocational
Services, Veterans Affairs, Legal aid, Education, and Recreation Services.
Included within each is a brief overview of the service provided, the address and days/hours of operation, as well as
the name and telephone number of the contact person. Websites are identified where known.
Fund Raising Activities have been conducted including yard sales and raffles. The proceeds are used to provide
seed money for new programs and to sustain existing programs for Johnston County citizens
Community Liaisons and Partnerships have been formed throughout Johnston County. Meetings have been held
with local leaders in nearly all townships within Johnston County including Mayors, Police Chiefs, Park & Recreation
Directors, Commissioners, Councilmen, City & County Planners for the purpose of identifying the needs of Johnston
County citizens in their local communities. Ongoing discussions are held with staff from counseling centers; mental
health, public health, and social service agencies; public school system and community college officials all in an effort
to consolidate and coordinate services wherever possible.
The Organization has been organized into four regional areas (East, Central, West, South), each managed by a
Regional Coordinator. Five Regional Community Meetings have been held in all areas of Johnston County. In all
meetings, leaders have been available from public health, mental health, and social service agencies, and from public
school system and community college programs to discuss available services and to address citizens' local concerns
and issues.
In light of the current critical economic crisis facing our Nation and community, the "Need to Feed" Project has been
started in Clayton to address one of the more pressing and immediate concerns of our citizens, that being having
adequate food to feed their families. To this end, a Clayton Community Food Committee has been formed and is
comprised of representatives from five local churches. The purpose of the Project is to coordinate and expand the
distribution of food by the churches through the efforts of STNinJC and Church volunteers, to increase the supply of
food, and to serve the food to needy citizens of Johnston County. To address the purpose of the Project, three
Initiatives have been created to address each of the needs: (1) Clayton Area Ministries Initiative; (2) Food Bin
Initiative; and (3) Thanksgiving Event Initiative.
The Organization's strength lies in its membership. Members are committed to performing community service in
activities sponsored or supported by the Organization. Some of these include participating with the Johnston County
Public Health Department in registering target populations for the H1N1 vaccine and in distributing information
concerning the Obesity and Diabetes Programs. Members have also participated on school committees in setting up
county-wide mentoring and other after school programs. Members currently volunteer on a weekly basis to distribute
food to those in need at one of the local churches. One member of the Coalition has volunteered to serve as a
translator for the Hispanic population in a drug and substance abuse program.
Members include a group of individuals with a wide range of talents and experiences but who share a single
commitment -- to serve others. Many have made outstanding contributions, accomplishments, and achievements in
their life. Many too hold prominent roles on boards and in civic clubs and organizations. The Organization is proud of
its members and wishes to recognize and applaud their success. This is achieved by highlighting one of its
outstanding members every month or two. This recognition appears on the Website Page - Members Corner.
